AMELIA ERHAR

In July 24, 1897 when Amelia Earhart was born. She was born in the town of Atchison, Kansas. Three years later her sister Grace Muriel was born, but everyone called her Muriel. They were raised in Kansas City but made many trips back to Atchison were their grandparents had lived.
Amelia’s family moved often, once to Iowa, and then back to Kansas and then to Chicago. In Chicago, Amelia graduated from high school in 1916 and enrolled in the Ogontz School in Rydal, PA. Her sister went to Toronto, Canada.
It was the Christmas of 1917 that Amelia went to visit her sister.
"Amelia, why don’t you come spend Christmas with me."
Amelia was glad to see her sister but she was saddened at seeing all the wounded men in the hospitals. The United States had just entered World War I but Canada had been in the war since 1914.
"Muriel, I can’t stand to see all these poor young soldiers in these hospitals. I just have to do something to help them!"
That is just what Amelia did. She decided to forget her studies and volunteer for the Red Cross. She helped out in a military hospital in Ontario and it was there that she had heard many stories from the men and their adventures in the other countries.
Amelia was fascinated most with the stories of the Royal Flying Corps, the pilots of the war.
